Ada Drinking Fountain Height Requirement

Many companies, schools and hospitals have adopted this option to reduce single-use plastic. To maintain ADA compliance, bottle filling must be within 48″ of the ground. Note that users must be able to reach the bottle filler from a sitting position at the front. Therefore, the lower bowl well should only extend 20″ from the wall.

The following drinking water wells are ADA compliant: The scope of drinking fountains applies separately to each floor of a facility, each secure area and each outdoor space containing drinking fountains. In each of these places with drinking fountains, half of the units must be accessible to wheelchair users and the other half in the standing place. If only one unit is provided at one of these locations, at least two separate units or a combination of high-low units are required for dual access. The exit heights shall be a maximum of 36″ measured from the ground to the outlet outlet, and shall be located at the front of the apparatus. An exception is drinking fountains, which are mainly used by children aged 12 and under, with the maximum exit height being 30″. The spout must provide a water flow of at least 4″ high to allow the insertion of a cup or glass. As a business owner, you have many rules to follow. Most of the time, these are confusing codes that can be difficult to understand. When it comes to the Americans With Disabilities Act, you want your customers to have the access they deserve. This also includes drinking water wells. Freestanding or integrated units must also have a free footprint of 30 x 48 inches. The depth of the integrated units shall not exceed the depth of the well.

To prevent the devices from being protruding objects, drinking fountains should not protrude more than 4″ (100 mm) above the wall. See Figure F. Water well controls must be mounted at the front or side near the leading edge. To be ADA compliant, wall-mounted water fountains must have a knee space between the ground or ground and the bottom of the well of at least 27 inches. The room should be at least 30 inches wide and 17 to 19 inches deep. There must be no equipment or other obstacles in the foot well. ADA-certified water fountains comply with the height and dimension measurements specified in the law. This concerns the total height of the well, the exit height, the expansion of the wall, the space for the knees, the front edge of the well, the absence of toes, the height of water flow and the free floor area. The dimensions of the ADA drinking fountain are as follows: bottle fillers, if available, must be compliant, even if they are integrated into drinking fountains. If only one bottle filler is available at some drinking fountains or in a bowl of a Hi-Lo unit, it is advisable to place it on the wheelchair-accessible unit or bowl. If a drinking fountain is provided, a nearby water cooler, bottle filler or sink cannot replace the wheelchair-accessible or standing fountain in new buildings, additions or modifications. Water coolers and bottle fillers can be supplied or integrated into compliant drinking fountains.

No drinking fountains are required if no fountains are provided, including water coolers or bottle fillers. Drinking fountains are prescribed by the building code as part of the calculation of sanitary equipment. It will tell you how many are needed depending on the type of occupancy and the number of occupants. Building codes may require that only one drinking fountain be provided, but accessibility standards require at least two. One at a lower altitude and the other at a standing height. Accessibility standards include requirements for both types. However, if you need to provide more than two drinking fountains, 50% should be at a lower height and the remaining 50% at the clear height. Drinking fountain manufacturers have all accessible units available that meet the requirements listed below. For drinking fountains, the requirements for protruding objects (§307) apply. Drinking fountains with leading edges of more than 27″ must be recessed in niches or treated so as not to exceed more than 4″ in traffic lanes.

Alcoves must be sized to accommodate the required clear floor area in wheelchair accessible units. The standards do not specify where units are to be assembled or specially designed for children. This provision is left to other building codes or regulations, best practices, customer preferences or other factors. Instead, the standards provide an exception that can be used when you decide to mount drinking fountains at heights for children aged 12 and under. Under this exception, the parallel approach instead of the forward approach with knee and toe clearance is allowed to fit a lower unit height, provided that the spout is not greater than 30″ and not more than 31/2″ of the leading edge of the aircraft, including the bumpers (§ 602.6).
